Laser Hair Removal... Worth It?
You have all heard about laser hair removal. Whether you have a friend who did it, saw a Groupon for it, or seen it advertised somewhere, you are aware of its existence. What you may not know is that it’s affordable, it works, and yes you need to get it done.
A few things you might wonder about:
Will laser hair removal work on me?
I can tell you right off the bat that it does not work well on blonde, white, gray, or red hair. If someone tells you it does and wants to take your money for it, make sure they give you a free treatment to “test” an area. The laser needs to be able to detect your hair follicle and it cannot do that if the color is too light. Dark, coarse hair works best!!
How many treatments will I need?
The question to that varies. Hair grows in stages and you cannot get it all at once so multiple appointments are required to rid your body of hair. Most places sell packages of 6 treatments and chances are you will need all 6. While you might see a result after one treatment, some hair is still going to come back. Appointments are usually spaced out every 6 weeks or so and it is not unusual to need a touch up once a year or so.
Why is that?
Although it’s called laser hair removal, what it really is considered is laser hair reduction.
Why is it so expensive?
Really? Think of all the razors, shaving cream, wax, and depilatories you have used over the years, not to mention the amount of time you have spent shaving. I wish I had done it long before I did!! I first did my underarms, which only took 4 treatments by the way, and I never have to shave again. To me that is priceless. No more having to worry if my underarms are shaved before I throw on a sleeveless shirt a bathing suit. No more having to worry if it’s noticeable during intimate moments. No more wasting time in the shower making sure they are smooth. After my underarms I moved on to my bikini area. Again, I never have to worry about what’s going on down there!! How great is that?? I have done my arms, my upper legs, random hairs on my face, my toes. Next I’m doing my lower legs! Bye bye razor!! You’re not needed here anymore!!
How do I find a reputable provider?
Do your research. Check with your friends and see if they have had it done and what their experience was like. Check out on-line reviews. Check out the provider. It’s all about skill and experience. In my experience most places are honest and offer a good service. No one wants bad reviews or a bad reputation and will work hard to protect their names in the industry. I’m currently getting services at Younger Faces By RNs in Marblehead, Massachusetts with Diane Ratner, RN and she is a wealth of information. She knows her stuff and is happy to educate you as she works on you.
What else should I know?
Lasers for hair removal have been in use since 1997 and have been approved for “laser hair reduction” by the FDA. To me that means they are safe and effective!
So here’s my advice: Do it. And pay for a package if they offer one because it’s usually a good price and you will need all 6 appointments. Follow all the pre and post care instructions. Follow through on all your treatments. You will never regret getting it done if you get it done right. And remember, a hair-free life is a carefree life!!
